Description
Fine early edition of the French oblong edition of this famous description of the Low Countries. For the French edition most plates are newly engraved by Petrus Kaerius.. The text is based on the Claes edition of 1609 and edited by Petrus Montanus.
This edition includes the extra plates of Bourbourg (page 465) and Béthune (page 511) only found in one other example (Paris, BNF). Also included are two plates with wind carriages. Amster-Dam and Amsterdam-Fish market, T’huys van Mansfeld – De Pyramide and the extra map of the Low Countries.
Ludovico Guicciardini was a nobleman from Florence, who lived and worked in the Low Countries, and died at Antwerp in 1589. His present work was translated into French, Dutch, Latin, -and even into German and English all through the sixteenth and part of the 17th century, and all editions were in folio. The illustrations in the numerous editions vary greatly, and were often renewed or replaced.
